A paradigm shift, fun and exciting
Glamorous life treasure waiting
Then came - my first morning, rude awakening
I did not expect, did not see it coming
Different time zone
Just all of a sudden, created chaos anger confusion
The fall September day -
One after another, threw changes my way
All the mix feelings, fearful weird thoughts
Went through my conscious
In the following days, acting like others
I made adjustments fit in-on the surface
And then I moved on to orientation - a few things to learn
Starting with my food, how to eat or when
The names of the foods and their flavors
It took my training, to indulge and immerse
Have English muffin or may be French toast
Choose flavored tea to have for breakfast
Variety fruit I may have for snack
Going to a picnic over at the public park
Munching chips from a bag, watch movies in the dark
Once I learn the pace - I may go for a dance
There are restaurants to mingle and eat
All new night spots, for a romantic night
Then! Came my first job untrained waitress
Anger, complaint, and a lot more stress
Fighting for my tip, became funny trip
Wouldn’t be a shame to take such hand out?
“This money they forgot!”
I start to shout, refused to take it
People I have served wined and dined
They complemented, the view of cloud
That extends into, blue ocean surface
The wind obviously swishing to their face
Which I had no patience to observe or notice
Acting like others, learning to collect tips
It is not so funny, when you collect money
Now I understand, speedy Gonzales is not so crazy!
As a new village girl that came from Africa
Such were my first days, here in America
